Working From Home – How to Have a Family AND a Career
Not so long ago, most women would give up their jobs or careers when they had children and concentrate on raising the children and looking after the family.
Today, it is a rare luxury for women to be able to be stay-at-home mums. Most of us have to go back to work and juggle a full or part-time job with the full-time job of being a mum. If you’re reading this, chances are you either need to or want to work and get paid for it.
Full-time or part-time work?
If you work part-time, the pay is usually not very good and if you work full-time, you don’t get to spend much time with the children. So which do you choose, time with your children but struggling financially? Or being comfortable financially but not seeing much of the children and then one day realising that they’ve grown up and you’ve missed their childhood?
What if there was a way to have your cake and eat it? To earn a decent living that fits around school hours (or part-time childcare arrangements)?
There is a way, and more and more mums are opting to work from home and fit their hours around family commitments while earning a salary that would normally be associated with a full-time job.
What if I don’t have the right skills?
There are so many different jobs you can do from home that there is bound to be something you can do. And in a large number of jobs, you will be given all the training you need. Being a mother, you already have many skills that are needed to be successful in business.
How do I get back into work after having had a long break looking after the children?
In many careers, you would either have to start again from the bottom or, worse, do more studying to get up to date before you can start work. Not recommended. If you work from home, however, you can get trained and start working at the same time if you choose the type of business that allows this. Many multi-level marketing or network marketing companies will train you while you start working and earning.
Internet marketing is another area where you can quickly start to work while still receiving training as well.
How do I start if I’m working full-time at the moment?
The beauty of many work-from-home opportunities is that you can start very part-time if you already have a full-time job and eventually give up the full-time job. But I don’t have any spare time, I hear you say. Well, for most work-from-home opportunities, you only need around 10 to 15 hours a week. That’s 2 hours a day or less, and it doesn’t have to be in one chunk.
It’s all about prioritising. If you really want to find time for something, you will. For example:
• Instead of watching TV for half an hour or an hour in the evening, could you do some work?
• How about getting up a little earlier?
• Going to bed a little later?
• Get a cleaner to free up some of your time?
• Do a little work when the children are in bed?
• Work on your work-from-home business during your lunch break at work?
30-minute chunks or larger are good, but if you can find six to eight 15-minute chunks a day, that’s enough to get you started.
How do I find the business that’s right for me?
This is an extremely important consideration. If it’s not the right business for you, chances are you won’t be motivated enough to make the time needed to be successful.
Think about the things that you enjoy, things that you are good at or things you’re interested in. You don’t need to know everything about the business you want to be in, as you’ll be able to get the training, but it needs to be something you can see yourself doing.
What’s stopping you?
